We are mourning the passing of Elvira Albanese. Elvira was born in 1928 in Gioiosa Ionica, Reggio Calabria, Italy. At 30 years old, she emigrated to New York City via the Cristoforo Colombo ship with three young children, an amazing feat of strength and resilience for a young woman who had never left her small town in Italy.

Living in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Elvira worked tirelessly as a seamstress to support her family. She later moved to Dyker Heights and spent the last decade living with her daughter Rose in Bay Ridge. She was known for her delicious cooking, making meals for holidays and later, always making sure her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had pasta and meatballs.

She was predeceased by her husband Bruno Albanese who passed away in 1983.

She is survived by her three children Sal Albanese, Rose Albanese-DePinto, and Ivana Albanese-Rizzo, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren who called her "Nonna."

Elvira was a remarkable woman and reaching 97 years old, her family is blessed and grateful to have had so many decades with her.
