On Saturday, April 18, 2020 William Lew Tom passed away peacefully at the age of 92 from complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at the NYU Langone Brooklyn hospital.
William was born to Foon and Gladys Tom at Maimonides Medical center (formerly known as United Israel Zion Hospital) in Brooklyn, New York on April 2, 1928.
He was a longtime resident in Brooklyn and lived in the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights. His creative nature and keen eye led him to work as a professional photographer for 5 years before transitioning to data management with Loeb Rhoads. He later worked as manager for Comvestrix data management Co. before retiring in 1993.
William was an avid NY Mets fan. He was a devoted husband, father and loved spending time with and was very proud of his granddaughters. As an ardent animal lover, William enjoyed the company of his dogs over the years. William, aka Willie, was well liked by all and known as easy going, kind and generous. He was known for his tutoring skills in Math and English and often worked with the children of friends and family.
During the Korean War, Bill served in the U.S. Army as a Corporal from 1950 to 1952.
After returning home he married the love of his life Mabel Lee on April 15, 1956.
They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year.
His memory will be kept alive by his wife and partner of 64 years, Mabel and his 2 children Shirley-Tom Byrne and husband James and Lawrence Lee Tom and wife Nora; his grandchildren Alanna Byrne and Rebecca Tom; his sisters Lillian Louie, Kim Chu and husband Garland, Lila Lum and husband Lin, and Amy Lee and husband Sun Bin and his nieces and nephews.
William held a lifetime membership at large with the Veterans Of Foreign War, New York State
