William Joseph Shea, 76, passed away on June 9, 2020, the result of heart complications. He now joins his Mother and Father, Madge and William Shea and brother, Raymond Shea. He was born on November 28, 1943 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Brooklyn remained his home his entire life. He moved to Bay Ridge in 1969 with his wife of 50 years Gerry Genco. He is survived by Gerry as well as their Daughter Laura Marie Delin of Staten Island, son in law Eric Delin and Grandson William John Delin who he is named after, and his dog Molly.
Most knew him as Bill or Billy, he personified dedication and commitment in career and civic duties. Before retiring, Bill was an employee of CitiBank for 44 years and worked in various departments throughout the Bank before settling into his career in the Management of the Signature Verification Unit. Bill oversaw units within the Bank as the world of technology grew the ability to electronically capture signatures to verify against the signature on the check. He assisted in the recovery of lost funds for the bank against many fraudulent activities. He was a member of the CitiBank's Quarter Century Club for his years of service to the company.
Bill had a passion for sports throughout his life. Bill was an avid hockey and softball player and played on teams for CitiBank in his early years with company. He played basketball in local leagues in Brooklyn. His love of sports gradually transitioned to assisting in many youth sports programs in the Bay Ridge Community, most in particular as a coach for the Swimming and Golf Teams at Fontbonne Hall Academy. Bill enjoyed nothing more than to share his love of both sports and educating others in these sports that he coined "could last a lifetime". He took great pride when a swimmer or golfer took their skills to the collegiate level or to gain employment as a lifeguard. Bill was the recipient of the GCSHAA Coaches Hall of Fame Award in 2007.
He enjoyed deer hunting in Pennsylvania. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, swimming in the pool himself and his daily routine of Pegasus for breakfast, walks along the Shore and drives in his little black sports car down Third Avenue. He enjoyed model ship building, astronomy, and building Lego's. He was the type of man that would start a conversation with pretty much anyone and left an indelible mark on many lives in the Bay Ridge community.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or other acknowledgements, the family requests you keep them and Bill in their prayers. Donations may be made in his name where he volunteered for 15 years:
