Obituary

William J. Morton was called to heaven on February 5, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 15, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, to Charles and Catherine (McCarthy) Morton, Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle.

He was preceded in death by his son, William. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (Calandra); his son, Jim (Sandy); his stepdaughter, Leslie (John); his grandchildren, Christina (AJ), Steven, Jimmy (Katie), Maren, Jack, Sean, and Ben; and his great-grandchildren, Francis, Alexandra, Thomas, James, Abigail, and Rory.

Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War aboard the USS Calcaterra, a destroyer stationed in the North Atlantic. A master welder and damage control chief, he dedicated himself to service both in the Navy and throughout his civilian career. After leaving the Navy, Bill worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and then for the New York City Board of Education as a stationary engineer and retired in 2002 as a Custodian Engineer.

A proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Bill was also a former president of AOH Division 22 in Bay Ridge and a current member of Division 21 in Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point.

Bill cherished his time in the Navy, his travels around the world, and the camaraderie with his brothers and sisters in Local 891. But above all, he treasured the moments spent with family and close friends. Family was everything to him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love and gratitude, now at peace with his son, Billy, by his side.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's honor to:
