We mourn the passing of Virginia Loff, born Virginia Rita Damico, a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. She was born in 1925 in Bed Stuy to parents of Albanian descent who came to this country from Calabria, Italy. She moved to Bay Ridge when she was a young girl. She was a member of the first graduating class of Fort Hamilton High School.
In 1945, when she was 20 years old, Virginia Damico met James Loff at a local Bay Ridge watering hole where they both were hoping to celebrate an end to WW II. Along the way, they celebrated each other and that led to their marriage the following year.
Virginia's work career included a variety of positions from: her Uncle Harry's hair salon on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, to the Armory during WWII, to the telephone company, to the post office at Neugard pharmacy in Bay Ridge. She could be seen throughout the years on Third Avenue running errands, volunteering at OLA school and church, and collecting books at the library. She was an avid reader.
Virginia loved her family, her friends, her church, and her baseball team the NY Mets - after the Brooklyn Dodgers left! She had may other interests and loves, including: Frank Sinatra, Michael Feinstein, Ronald Reagan, owls, lighthouses, sweets and watching Jeopardy. She was a proud member of the Leemark Lanes bowling league for most of her life. When she was younger, she enjoyed listening to music and going dancing with friends, and we recently learned she not only met but danced with Duke Ellington !
Virginia is survived by her 4 children: Donald, Steven, Maureen and Patty, her 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
