 Thomas Spielman was born in 1949 in Maspeth, Queens. He grew up in Hicksville, Long Island with his parents, Viola and Jack Spielman, and four siblings, Susan, Bob, Jane and Anne. He created lifelong friends in Hicksville and in the Navy where he served from 1968 to 1971 as an Internal Navigation Systems Technician on the A6-A aircraft. Tom always had a passion for cooking and worked in the restaurant business in Long Island and New York City. He met his wife, Virginia, when they both worked at the Vista Hotel at the World Trade Center. 

 They married in 1989 and has two daughters, Nora and Zoe. Tom lived in Bay Ridge for over 30 years and raised his family here. Tom shared his love of cooking, movies, music, reading and art with his daughters. In retirement he pursed art classes at Kingsborough Community College's My Turn Program. He was a volunteer in soup kitchens and was a "talking buddy" with ESL students. He fought his illness with dignity and courage and was an inspiration to all, including his medical team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. 
 He is survived by his wife, daughters, siblings, several nieces and nephews, including three grand nieces.
