Theofanio Papadimitropoulos, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away at the age of 88, at her home in Brooklyn, New York. Theofanio Papadimitropoulos was born February 14, 1935 in Sparta, Greece. There she met and married her husband George and had two children, Frances and John. They emigrated to New York in 1967 for a better life.
Theofanio may have been small but her mannerisms and way about her were larger than life. Those who knew her can remember her walking around Bay Ridge with her carriage to all her favorite markets. She will be remembered for her delicious cooking where she was loved by all staff and patrons at The Royal Restaurant. She had a way about her that we all loved. The way she would nod her head and speak with her hands to express herself. The best times was "coffee time" with seeded cookies from St. Anthony's bakery, not to mention the homemade koulourakia cookies.
Theofanio could do anything, but the one thing she couldn't do was keep her husband off the rooftop garden, despite her efforts.
Theofanio lived for her family, and played a big role in raising her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She would watch her grandchildren in the mornings and then start her workday at the restaurant in the afternoons. She then went on to watch the next generation of kids, great-grandchildren. She would wait with a smile, poking her head out of her door on fifth avenue awaiting their arrival in the mornings. As a great-grandma, she'd pull them around in a wagon with pillows behind their back and crawl around on the floor playing hide-and-seek. She made sure none of her grandkids would get sick by putting paper towels in their shirts to soak up sweat after playing and covering them with many, many blankets. We all cannot forget she made sure all the children had to have creases in their sweatpants and ironed onesies.Yiayia made sure to hide chocolates for the great-grandchildren to find. She played "kounia-bella" swinging her grandchildren in blankets and bouncing them on her knee singing her favorite songs.
Those who knew her loved her. The best memories were all the holidays at her house with the long table covered in food that she prepared with love. Theofanio made the Vasilopita cake and chose who gets the quarter (kids). She made the best Greek food that we all cherished. She loved to feed her family and made sure that they were always full.
Theofanio embodied family values and instilled those values in the generations after her. A true matriarch. Her memory will be eternal.
Theofanio is survived by her husband George, son John, grandchildren Antonia, Faye, Leo, Daniel, Andrew, Justin, and great grandchildren Alex, Thomas, Niko, Eleena, and Gabriel.
