IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia
Andersen
November 1, 2020
Sylvia Andersen, born February 9 th , 1931, passed away peacefully in her home on November 1 st at the age of 89. Sylvia was known by several names: daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Though the name she was most proud of was grandmother.
She is remembered by her children: Vicki Buono; Steven and (Dina) Andersen; Dawn and (Bob) Prezioso; Russell and (Janet) Andersen; and Susan and (Michael) Raleigh. Her grandchildren: Eugene and Cory Buono; Anna Prezioso; Connor, Caitlin (Carpino) and Heather Raleigh; Sebastian and Jewel Andersen; and her two great grandchildren, Sam and Lola Buono.
Sylvia is joining her parents, her brother Bill, her husband Russell and her son-in-law Eugene in heaven.
When her children were young, Sylvia would paint murals on their walls – favoring both Bambi and Tinkerbell. During Christmas, the family would paint snowflakes on the windows of their Bay Ridge home. As time passed, she expressed her love of art through other mediums. Every Thanksgiving at her daughter Susan's home she insisted on decorating her own Christmas tree. While she did a splendid job every year, a couple of ornaments weren't lucky enough to survive the annual tradition. Come Christmas she would decorate gingerbread cookies with vigor. Though, Easter may have been her favorite. Every Easter she would outdo us all when it came to decorating Easter eggs.
Her children reflect upon Swedish pancakes, macaroni and cheese, tuna casserole with potatoes chips and the weekly Sunday roast. Her grandchildren may remember with vehemence that she was unable to cook anything other than an Elios pizza or meatloaf. Once Sylvia even asked her grandson Connor, who was no older than eight at the time, how long to microwave a bagel. For anyone curious, a bagel microwaved for fifteen minutes may result in a minor fire.
Above all, Sylvia loved spending time with her grandchildren, whose cherished memories span four decades—from countless weekends watching movies and camping out on the floor of the house, to running into the living room, sitting in front of the box with all the toys, and pulling out all of her assorted cat figurines. She had a giant cat named Bum, and would feed some stray cats hanging out in her backyard. Her grandkids are overwhelmingly grateful that they got to spend so much time with her and to have all these memories to hold with them in the future.
