Shirley M. Zuppone (née Verner) passed away on February 9, 2021 at the NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, New York at the age of 79. Born on October 7, 1941 in Kelso, Washington, she met her husband of 59 years, George P. Zuppone, at a USO event in Tacoma while he was stationed nearby at Fort Lewis, Washington after returning to the U.S. following his military service in Korea. They were married on her 20th birthday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
George brought Shirley to Brooklyn where they became the parents of five children. In addition to her beloved husband George, Shirley is survived by her children Christine Moltisanti (the late Ronald), Michael Zuppone (Elizabeth), Renee Jachemczyk (Edward), Nicole Bove, and Maria Zuppone, as well as grandchildren Jessica, Thomas, Taylor, Michael Jr., Brianna, Caitlyn, Matthew, Karissa, and Andrew. She was also the dear sister of Beverly, the late Theodore, Virginia, and Carol as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley's all-encompassing focus on her family and home was evident to all who knew and loved her. A wonderful cook, she seemed happiest when offering her delicious meals to a large table filled with family and friends, and often found herself brokering who was entitled to the last homemade chicken cutlet or piece of banana bread. Shirley was as an avid poker player participating in couples' poker groups for many years, and she loved to play bingo and other card games, passions that live on in her children and grandchildren.
A longtime member of and volunteer at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Brooklyn, Shirley took pride in the Catholic education of all of her children at OLA and then Xaverian, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Bishop Kearney high schools, which was very important to her.
To know Shirley was to understand she was the anchor of as well as anchored by her family and will be dearly missed but always in our hearts.
