Rudy Riska was born in 1936 in Manhattan and grew up on the lower east side. He was a superb athlete and pitched in the minor leagues with the New York Yankees. His baseball career was cut short by injury, but his contacts in the sports world landed him with a job at the Downtown Athletic Club ("the DAC") where he became the club's Athletic Director. The DAC was the Home of the Heisman Trophy and Rudy's involvement over the next 50 years would make him known as the "conscience of the Heisman and caretaker of the fraternity of winners."
In addition to the Heisman, he created fitness and sports programs for the members and a number of athletic awards that brought many of the top athletes from every sport to the DAC. Over his life he came into contact with celebrities and heroes, instituted programs to help various charities and lived a life filled with sport.
More important than anything he accomplished professionally, his kindness and generosity made him beloved to all who knew him. In that way he will live on in all the many people's lives he touched
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Rudy's memory to:
