It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Emmett Moran, of New York City, announce his passing on July 19, 2020 on his 81st birthday. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, the town he loved so well. He met the love of his life, Betty, on a blind date and it was love at first sight. They were married for 58 years and were blessed to have had big celebrations for their 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries. They renewed their wedding vows on their 50th Anniversary in Saint Patrick's Cathedral with their adoring children and grandchildren in attendance. They raised their five children Robert( Nicole), Linda, Donna( Michael), Kevin ( Kim) and Michael(Jennifer) in Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish in Brooklyn. Some of their happiest memories were made at Breezy Point Surf Club where Betty and Bob developed enduring friendships and a love of Irish music.
After retiring from the NYC Transit Authority, Bob travelled extensively with Betty throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. Regardless of the beautiful places he travelled, he was a New Yorker at heart, and he explored it with unmatched knowledge and excitement, a casual day could be a trip to Ellis Island to gather family history, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, finding deals at the 99 cents store, haggling on Canal Street for jewelry and shrimp, enjoying Broadway shows, wandering the Oculus and dining at fancy restaurants.
He was affectionately known as Pop by everyone in Battery Park City. Pop befriended everyone in the neighborhood as he ran his daily errands, going to get lottos and tic-tacs, visiting the shoemaker and walking to Chinatown. He couldn't walk a block without stopping to talk to his countless friends or dogs that knew a treat was waiting.
His grandchildren were the biggest source of his pride and joy. Pop's wisdom, humor, stories, cooking and presence will be missed tremendously by his ten loving grandchildren: Krista, Bryan, Jamie, Michael, Marissa, Kevin, Thomas, Chloe, Matthew and Joseph.
A mutual strong bond existed between Uncle Bob and his nieces and nephews. They will miss their family historian and the many Moran stories that he loved to share. The family takes comfort knowing that he was reunited on his birthday with his loving parents (Margaret and Peter) and his beloved brothers Peter and Vincent.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Robert on Friday, July 24 at 9:30 a.m., at Resurrection Church 2331 Gerritsen Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11229
with Rev. William A. With, Pastor presiding.
