Obituary

Father Daniel Stephen Murphy went home to God on December 12, 2024. It was the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Mary was watching over him.

Father Danny was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 27,1944 to the late Kathryn (Driscoll) Murphy and Daniel Murphy. His childhood days in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn were carefree and happy ones filled with love. During Father Danny's boyhood, the joyful faith of the priests at Our Lady of Angels had a profound effect on the formation of Father Danny's spirituality.

Father Danny attended St. Augustine's Diocesan High School and Cathedral College in Brooklyn, New York before entering the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, Long Island. He was ordained as a diocesan priest in 1970.

During his ministry, Father Danny served as a parish priest in St. Mary Star of the Sea, St. Brigid, Resurrection-Ascension and Our Lady Help of Christians and as pastor at St. Andrew the Apostle, Holy Child Jesus, and St. Saviour's. In his "retirement", he assisted at Holy Cross Parish in Vero Beach, Florida.

Father Danny's exuberant spirit brought light and joy wherever he went. He connected with people in so many ways and on many levels. He spread God's message beyond the realm of his parish ministry. Over the years, he became involved in Marriage Encounter, his famous Homily Hot-line, …and the New York Mets. He was actually the unofficial chaplain for the Mets from 1984-1990. And yes, he loved a good party!

One of Father Danny's lasting gifts to us is his convincing message that God is always with us and loves us no matter what. His life is a testimony of his love for God and God's love for him.

Father Danny is survived by his sister Kathleen, her husband Lloyd, and his nieces: Cathanne and her husband Peter, Susan and her husband George, and Molly and her husband Brendan. He also is survived by his grandnieces and grandnephews: Julia, Callen, Caitlin, Garrett, Kaya and Weston. Father Danny also will be missed by many other close family members and friends who supported him in his ministry.
