Obituary

Philip Eways passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024.  Philip, born on February 17, 1937, was 87 years old, and a life-long resident of Brooklyn.  He was a renowned "street," basketball player, who until well into his seventies, would often be found in the parks of Bay Ridge amongst his friends shooting his "automatic" jumpshot. Philip was also passionate about all the arts and culture New York City had to offer, and was an avid chess player, teaching his son, daughter, and his six year old grandson how to play.  Most recently, his grandson exclaimed "Pa taught me how to play, but I taught him how to win."

The youngest of three children, Philip was predeceased by his parents, Rose Taweel and Gus Eways, as well as his brothers, Alfred and Eddie Eways and his beloved Uncle Sam Taweel. He and his brothers were named after three Kings, who his mother had a great affinity for. Philip grew up playing street games and would often speak about his days playing stickball on the streets of Sunset Park.

Philip was a U.S. Army Veteran, who played basketball and baseball while in the service.  He was a devoted fan of  the Brooklyn Dodgers and often spoke with great acclaim for the legendary Jackie Robinson, who he not only admired for his athletics, but for his impact on racial equality in sports. And if he was talking about the G.O.A.T in basketball, it was most certainly LeBron James. Philip's love for music was always evident; he sang in the church choir and was a saxophone player in his youth. He attended the original Woodstock, and some of his favorite musicians were Otis Redding, Louis Armstrong, and Nina Simone. You would often hear him talk about his best-loved horn player, Bunny Berrigan, as he enthusiastically sang along to the song "I Can't Get Started."

Philip graduated from Fort Hamilton High School and attended college at Baruch. A renaissance man, he was a businessman and owned the childcare center, Bay Ridge Play Place, as well as a grocery store in Brooklyn. He also worked in Hotel Management, and held different operational positions in fire, safety and building management, including working for the New York Times.

Philip leaves behind his heartbroken children; his daughter Janan, her partner Ray; his son Eric, his wife Kimberli and their two children, Xander Philip and Zara. He is also survived by his nephews, niece, and many great nieces, nephews, and cousins, who all adored him. Philip's grandchildren were the light of his life, and he was a very proud and loving grandfather.  He was affectionately known by his grandchildren as "Pa," and Pa loved them infinitely, expressing his love for them with all his heart until the very last moments of his life.

Philip will always be remembered for the impact he had on the lives of so many. He was deeply loved and will be cherished forever.
