IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter Francis
Murphy
February 15, 1945 – November 2, 2025
Peter Francis Murphy was a Brooklyn man through and through. He was born in Park Slope on February 15, 1945, the third of five children to Edward and Vivian Murphy of 14th Street. He attended Xaverian High School and St. John's University. He later settled in Bay Ridge, where he became a familiar face at the local American Legion Post and was infamous as the "Bird Man of 78th Street" for walking with one or more of his many Cockatoos or Macaws on his shoulder. Peter was a past grand night of the Holy Name Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Professionally, Peter dedicated the bulk of his working life to the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority, where he served in his early years as bus driver and train operator before becoming a supervisor. He worked diligently in each of these roles and at all times Peter was proud to keep his beloved New York City in motion.
A man whose generosity knew no bounds, Peter's greatest love may have been reserved for his nieces and nephews, who will always cherish the memories of his arrival at Christmas time with the car filled to the brim with presents. Peter's material generosity was a mere reflection of his unlimited generosity of heart.
Peter is survived by his older brother Paul Murphy (Janis), and sisters Teddy Levi, Mimi Murphy, and Fran Murphy. He also leaves behind saddened nieces and nephews: Jaye McLaughlin (Matt), Brian Murphy (Tara), Kama Levi, Sara Levi, Kore Del Pasqua, Kieran Del Pasqua (Sandra Fransen), Marta Mercuri (Sean Bosman) and Max Mercuri. These nieces and nephews, and now their 15 children, will miss their Uncle Peter dearly.
Peter Murphy was a man who cherished the simple pleasures of life -- a cold beer, neighborhood stroll, and, often enough, a perfectly timed fart joke. Peter deeply loved his dog Poochini , who will forever miss strolling the streets with Peter and a bird or two on his shoulder. The block neighbors, Brooklyn, and the innumerable lives touched by Peter sincerely mourn the loss of this generous humble funny loving man
