IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter A.
Amentas
October 6, 1950 – October 11, 2020
Peter Amentas, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on October 11th at the age of 70, after a long battle with brain cancer. During his illness, Peter lived with the same decisiveness, bravery, acceptance, and connection to others, with which he had lived his life.
Born in Brooklyn, Peter attended Fort Hamilton and Brooklyn Tech high schools. At Brooklyn College, he graduated magna cum laude, with a major in sociology. Peter continued his education by earning a master's degree in counseling and also studied nursing at Long Island College Hospital.
With his interest in medical science and in helping others, Peter became a Charter Member of Bravo Volunteer Ambulance and was instrumental in its founding in 1974. During his more than forty years with the organization, Peter remained a strong and effective leader, serving on many committees and on the Board of Directors where he was chairman for several terms. Peter was an EMT and a driver, as well as a trainer for newcomers guiding them by example, not only in technical skills, but by his confident, caring manner in treating each patient and his fellow crew members.
Peter proudly served the country for three years in the Air Force, with much of that time on the ground in Vietnam. Upon his return, after spending a year in the seminary and then considering a career in the police department, Peter devoted most of his professional life to working for the US government as a Special Agent in US Customs.
Peter is survived by his loving and devoted wife Zilda, his son Luke, his daughter Maura and husband Paul, his granddaughters Colette and Maggie, his daughter Andrea, his sister Mary and husband Teddy, his nephew George, his niece Lia and husband James, his brother George, and his cherished aunts and uncles. Peter will be dearly remembered by the countless friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, competence, and grace.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory can be made to:
