Peggy Ann
Nelson
January 29, 1954 – April 26, 2026
Margaret Nelson, affectionately known as Peggy, was born on January 29, 1954, and was raised in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Elizabeth and Absolam Nelson, alongside her older sister, Jane. Peggy was also the beloved daughter of Veronica Nelson.
A lifelong educator, Peggy attended St. Edmund High School in Brooklyn before continuing her studies at Brooklyn College, where she pursued a degree in Childhood Education. From a young age, she knew she wanted to dedicate her life to helping children, and she found her calling in the classroom.
Peggy began her teaching career with Catholic Charities in her early twenties before joining P.S. 380, where she devoted more than four decades to educating and supporting her students. As a special education teacher, she was known for her compassion, patience, and unwavering commitment to every child entrusted to her care. She genuinely loved her students and colleagues and took great pride in helping children reach their full potential.
Although teaching was one of her greatest passions, Peggy’s deepest wish was to become a mother. In 1998, accompanied by her sister Jane, she traveled to China to adopt her beloved daughter, a moment she considered one of the greatest blessings of her life. Upon returning home, Peggy and her daughter built a life together in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where they shared an unbreakable bond and countless cherished memories.
Peggy was a devoted daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin, friend, and mother. She was known for her kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty to those she loved. She especially enjoyed preparing holiday meals and hosting family gatherings, with Christmas holding a special place in her heart. Nothing brought her greater joy than having family together around her table.
A woman of deep faith, Peggy had a special devotion to Our Lady and often turned to prayer throughout her life. She believed her prayers were answered when she received the life-changing news that she would become a mother. The opportunity to travel to China and bring her daughter home was a blessing she treasured forever.
Peggy will be remembered as a compassionate educator, a faithful woman, a loyal friend, and a loving mother whose kindness touched countless lives. Her beautiful spirit, caring heart, and enduring love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
