It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nikolay Tsurkan, 87, of Brooklyn, New York, on February 14, 2025.
Nikolay was born in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, on March 24, 1937, and later spent considerable time living in Baku, Azerbaijan, as well as Brooklyn, New York. He was an athlete, paratrooper, inventor, but most importantly, a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather.
Nikolay was a man who brought up his family from nothing. Although he and his family were forced from their home during World War II, he was always determined to better the lives of his family. From a young age, he cared for his mother, sister, and brother in the absence of his father, whose life was taken by the war. Eventually, despite the difficulties of his early life, he obtained an education, knowing it was vital for supporting his future family.
When Nikolay was called for military service, his capabilities facilitated his rise to the role of staff sergeant in the airborne division. By the end of his service, he had over 30 day and night parachute jumps under his belt; an impressive achievement.
Overcoming childhood hardship, Nikolay built a successful career as an engineer. He held mechanical engineering and managing roles in oil, shipbuilding, and toolmaking industries. Soon, his colleagues came to rely on his expertise and problem-solving intuition. His mechanical abilities were something that transcended his career into a passion, and were skills which he passed onto his children and grandchildren. These talents further grew into hobbies for art, especially crafting, sewing, and painting with great detail.
His entire life, Nikolay put his family first, moving them to America for a better future, even though it meant leaving behind the old life he built in Baku. In America, he helped establish the lives of his children and raised his grandchildren. What brought him most joy was spending time with his family, taking walks outdoors with his wife, and playing his favorite game, backgammon, with his son and grandson on his own handmade board.
Nikolay is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sofiya, his loving children, Yelena and Sergey, his daughter in-law Galina, and his grandchildren, Phillip, Natalie, and Nicole.
