It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Michael Gerard O'Malley, on May 15th, 2022. Michael was a true Brooklynite and avid fan of the New York Rangers, Mets, and Football Giants. He was brought to this Earth and spent his early years on 416 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, before his loving brothers and sister were brought into his life, spurring a move to Bensonhurst. Michael, his brothers Tommy and Patty, and sister Eileen spent their summers at the Police Athletic League Camp upstate, while they menaced the streets of Bensonhurst for the rest of the year. During his early years he developed a love for athletics of all types including bowling with his father, golf, baseball, football, and hockey. Michael attended Bishop Ford HS for one year, and graduated from New Utrecht High School in 1974. Ever a high achiever, he graduated from Baruch College in one day and went to work for Kidder, Peabody & Co. on Wall Street. Michael spoke fondly of his days on Wall Street, forever remembering a cruise with his coworkers that involved tales of intense soccer matches with the ship crew and other tales lost to time. Michael would spend the remainder of his working days advancing the public interest. He became an MTA bus driver, working out of the Jackie Gleason Depot, where he developed a skill that someday would save countless lives. Michael was a willing and able participant of the social life of Southern Brooklyn, getting his "Tony Manero" on at 2001 Odyssey and playing for a wide-range of bar-sponsored softball teams. It was in Nell Flaherty's that he met his beloved wife Laura, and it was in Bay Ridge that he nurtured his loving children, Matthew and Kaylin, instilling in them the same values and life lessons he had learned as a yute of Brooklyn. Michael continued his softball career and enjoyed many more jovial times during his twenty seven summers spent at Breezy Point Surf Club with his family and friends.

Michael was a Court Officer for the New York State Supreme Court on Centre Street in Manhattan when one plane, then another, struck the Twin Towers. Not knowing what would happen in the immediate future, he selflessly got behind the wheel of a bus and ferried people to safety in Brooklyn, making multiple trips between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Although not known at the time, this act of bravery would become his ultimate sacrifice. Most likely a result of his time spent near Ground Zero, he would be diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2019. Ever retaining his youthful energy and lust for adventurousness, he moved to Waterford Assisted living in Brighton Beach in early 2022 where he quickly became a fixture of his community, popping in patient's doors to say "What's up?" or helping the staff in their daily cleaning routines. In another unfair twist of fate, Michael developed a bacterial infection that cost him his life, but as his stubborn nature dictated, not before regaining his pulse twice. Michael went out the way that he lived, fighting alongside his loving family, and potentially able to save two others lives with his kidneys.
