IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael
Loughran
November 18, 1944 – January 6, 2024
Michael Loughran of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, at the age of 79 years.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Paula of 47 years, his brother Eugene Loughran, of Belfast, his brother Patrick Loughran, of Belfast, and his brother Charlie Loughran, of Belfast.
Michael is survived by his son Patrick, (Alia), his sister Brigid Loughran, of Belfast, his sister Kathleen Loughran, of Kentucky, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Michael was born in Belfast in 1944 the second of six children, to Patrick Joseph Loughran, and Annabelle (Belle) Loughran, (nee Halfpenny). He came to America in 1965, enlisted in the Army, trained and was sent to Vietnam, 82nd Airborne Paratroopers. But his brother Eugene's severe injuries spared Michael from frontline duty, and he was sent home to complete his service. Stationed at Fort Hamilton Army Base for the duration of the War, at a USO dance he met his Pauline Margaret, (Nee Nugent), of Sunset Park, who had only recently arrived from England with her young family. They were married at OLPH in 1969, and became lifelong residents of Bay Ridge Brooklyn, where they raised their only son, Patrick.
Michael started his joiner carpentry apprenticeship in 1961 in Belfast and completed it before coming to the States. He was a highly skilled and passionate woodworker. He became facilities manager for Bloomingdales in NYC, for a number of years, then went on to manage the Stuyvesant Town facilities, until 1980. He spent the remainder of his career working for Health and Hospitals, at Metropolitan Hospital, as a Shop Steward. Michael retired a Union carpenter after 30 years. Early retirement was split between Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and Jim Thorpe, PA, where the family had made a second home. After losing Paula in 2016, he and Patrick made a new second home in the Hudson Valley, where he enjoyed many things, including sky diving, (at 75l).
He battled throat cancer in 2020, but he didn't let it define him. He suffered some setbacks in recent years, but he managed it well.
Michael was a voracious reader, who loved al things Russian, German, Military, WW2, and he became very knowledgeable on these subjects. He was very clever and a great conversationalist.
In loving Memory of him.
