A daughter of the late Charles and Marcella Whelan, she graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1932. Married to Thomas F. Maher for 35 years, they raised six children: Barbara McConville (Jack), Peter (Kathy), Marcella Freisen (Joe) and Brigid Maher (Olaf Bjorkman). Two children predeceased her: Thomas (Ann) and Mary Ellen Nix (Bob). Survivors include 21 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings: William, Charles, Frank, Robert and Dorothy Whelan. Her marriage of 20 years to William (Buddy) Phelan brought the inclusion of his children and grandchildren into her family.
