Obituary

Mary O'Keeffe, age 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on June 5, 2025, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Born on February 10, 1949, in Cork City, Ireland, to Michael and Margaret Murphy, Mary carried the heart and spirit of Ireland with her throughout her life.

In 1971, Mary married the love of her life, Timothy O'Keeffe, in Blarney, County Cork.

Together, they embarked on a new chapter by immigrating to the United States, where they raised a family and built a life rooted in devotion, community, and tradition.

Mary worked in home care for over 30 years, treating those she looked after as if they were her own parents. A patient, kind-hearted woman, she was a quiet source of comfort and dignity to so many in need.

She was the cherished mother of Ann Reilly (Michael), Tara Davila (Frank), and Michelle Barbarotta, and the adored grandmother of Frankie, Tim, Tristan, Scarlett, Sonny, and Mickey.

She was immensely proud of her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to share their accomplishments with pride and joy.

A beloved member of the Bay Ridge community, Mary was known for her warmth and friendly spirit. She delighted in lunches with her grandchildren and looked forward to meeting neighbors on the avenue for a friendly chat— often jokingly referred to as the "Mayor of Third Avenue."

An avid gardener, she found peace and happiness among her flowers, nurturing her plants as lovingly as she did her family.

She loved to travel back home to Cork, where she would reminisce fondly about her youth and reconnect with lifelong friends. Her heart never left the winding roads and familiar faces of her hometown. She taught us that a cup of tea could solve anything—a simple gesture that held comfort, conversation, and care. And of course a bit of Paddy Reilly to sing along to.

She is survived by her husband Timothy; her daughters Ann, Tara, and Michelle; her six beloved grandchildren; her brother Tony Murphy (Nora) of Cork, Ireland; and her sister Margaret McGillicuddy (Jimmy) of Cork, Ireland. She is also survived by numerous lifelong friends both in Brooklyn and back home in Cork, along with many nieces and nephews

She always had a way of putting things into perspective, often saying with a smile, "Everything is grand." No matter the situation, her calm reassurance brought comfort to those around her. It was her way of reminding us to keep going, to find the good in each day, and to trust that things would work out in the end. Her steady presence and optimistic spirit were a gift to all who knew her. Taz, everything is grand and until we meet again. May the road rise to meet you……
