Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Martin “Marty” Doyle at the age of 84 on May 6th, 2026 after a valiant battle with cancer. Overcoming childhood polio, Marty became a passionate language teacher known for his humor, fairness, empathy, and heartfelt stories. He established the first student exchange program between the US and the Soviet Union, bridging cultures while often leaving students in stitches with his interactive teaching style and quick wit.

A well-traveled chef, Marty delighted friends and family with delicious meals and a martini in hand, and believed that life was too short to put up with bad food or miss out on good company. He cherished crossword puzzles, believing no clue was too challenging as long as he could have a cigar and feel the sun as he sat on his porch and surveyed the neighborhood. He enjoyed intellectual discourse about politics and science but was equally good at making fart jokes and flirting with waitresses who loved his charming ways. He always had a kind word and generous tip for service staff, which earned him the nickname “Fabuloso”at the local diner. He was a romantic at heart, spontaneously buying flowers for his wife who was his best friend and companion of 49 years.

He cherished summers spent in Vermont with friends and family and called his old cabin a “little piece of heaven” where everyone was welcome and many cousins and friends had memorable vacations over the years.

As a devoted father to two sons and a father figure to many, Marty combined parenting with humor, turning everyday moments into cherished memories punctuated by laughter. Having worn many hats as a teacher, world traveller, scholar, chef and mentor, he also spent a brief period being a stay-at-home dad when his oldest son was a toddler.

He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Maureen, two sons, Lex and Andrew (only one of whom inherited his culinary skills), and his daughter-in-law, Aditi who loved all his stories, laughed the hardest at his jokes and cooked him his favorite spicy food.

As we celebrate Marty’s life, let’s remember him with a toast — martini in hand, or maybe a cigar or a good meal, and laughter in our hearts, just as he would have wanted. Cheers to you, Marty; may you rest in peace, puzzle, and crack jokes in the great beyond!
