Marion Klar (nee Soare) passed away on August 9, 2026. Born on June 8, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy Waltman and the late Anthony Zarekos. Marion was lovingly raised by her grandmother and her husband, the late Helen & George Soare.

Marion shared 27 years of marriage with her beloved husband, the late Richard Klar. Both NYC public school teachers, they met when his class was behind hers going up the stairs at P.S. 287 in Fort Greene. Richard enjoyed writing poetry, and many of his writings were devoted to and about her.

Marion was an extremely devoted mother to her daughter Lisa, for whom she would do anything. Her love and devotion extended to her son-in-law Lou and her three grandchildren, Alanah, Rebecca and Anna, who were the light of her life. She spent countless hours playing ‘fort’ and ‘restaurant’ with them when they were young, encouraging them in their educational endeavors, and catching up with them on all of their goings-on as they grew.

Marion felt ever grateful and privileged that she had the opportunity to attend and graduate from Hunter College. She spent her entire career with the NYC Board of Education, first teaching elementary education, followed by English as a Second Language at the elementary level, and culminating as Coordinator of the ESL program. In retirement, she became an adjunct professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. She was a proud educator, caring mentor and supportive colleague, and found immense joy in her profession.

Outside of her career, Marion enjoyed spending time with her many, many friends. She loved going to art museums, Broadway shows and gardening. Every summer, the garden oasis on her terrace was admired by friends and passersby.

Marion weathered life’s curveballs with grace – she remained positive and strong even when her husband was taken too soon, and later when macular degeneration robbed her of much of her sight.

Though she recently moved to NJ to be closer to family, Marion remained a proud Brooklynite through and through, unshakeable in her belief that NYC is the greatest city in the world.

Above all and until the end, Marion was a kind, compassionate and generous soul.
