Kjell Barth Kittilsen died at the age of 87 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Born on November 13, 1938 in Porsgrunn, Norway, Kjell was the only child of Erling and Hjordis Kittilsen. The family immigrated to America in 1950 and settled in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where Kjell lived until his death. After serving in the US Army and a decades-long career as a stone mason, Kjell spent his retirement as an active member of the Sons of Norway and quartermaster of his local VFW Post, where he enjoyed playing cards with fellow veterans. He was also an avid stamp collector, soccer fan (in particular the Norwegian national team and Manchester United), and a friend to many. He is survived by his longtime partner, Barbara Kristiansen, his children Kenneth Kittilsen, Loren Kittilsen (Luka Djunic), and Kristina Kittilsen (Steve Weller), five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and many cousins and extended family members in Norway. Unpretentious and generous, he will be remembered for his big heart and quick wit, which stayed with him until the end.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he received excellent care in his final days, or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. (Please send acknowledgement email to: lorenkit@hotmail.com)
