Sadly, on Saturday August 28, Kathleen (Kay) O'Connor (nee Hannon) passed away at the age of 90. A strong, loving and caring women who dedicated her life to the continued growth and nourishment of her family sailed away with the angels. The light that she brought into this world will never be extinguished as it is carried by everybody that she interacted with. She was born, raised in, led her family in and died in Brooklyn. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her three children, Pat Schmidt (the late Tom), Linda Kilcommons (Bill) and Jimmy O'Connor (Donna), her four grandchildren, Kirsten, Erik, James and Katie and one great-grandchild, Derek. A wake will be held on Wednesday, September 1 from 4 PM - 8 PM at Clavin Funeral Parlor in Bay Ridge Brooklyn to honor and celebrate the life of "Nanny".
Kay O'Connor was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY as the youngest child and only sister to her four brothers. She often told stories about what it was like being the only girl among her four older brothers and how they had all been her biggest supporters and her best friends. If you asked her, she would laugh and say that they annoyed her endlessly but that they made her the person that she became: strong, thoughtful and creative. She would do anything she could for her family and they were her driving force throughout her life. The start of her family was in 1951 when she married her husband James O'Connor. They had three wonderful kids together, Patti, Linda and Jimmy. They all lived together in the one bedroom apartment that Kay lived in until her last days. She did everything in her power to make that one bedroom feel like a home. She would spend days meticulously putting up Christmas decorations to make the apartment more warm and inviting, and that is exactly what she did. If you walked into her apartment you would see pictures of her loved ones. She had pictures of her children, grandchildren and even her great grandson. She always wanted to show off their accomplishments and tell anyone who would listen about how proud she was of her family. Her heart was so full of love that she had to go and share it with everyone she met. Whether she was waving you goodbye and blowing kisses from her front door or giving you something that she had crocheted just for you, she made an impact on everyone who crossed her path. Her loss is one that is felt widely but she leaves us all with fond memories, lots of laughs and all the love that she has given us from her 90 years on this Earth.
