Juliana McTernan (nee Reynolds) passed away peacefully on January 20, 2021. She was born in Aughavas, County Leitrim Ireland on January 26, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Julia (nee Curran) Reynolds. She was the beloved wife of the late John P. Mc Ternan. Loving mother of John, Moira (Knutsen), Thomas, Kevin and Theresa (Dowdy). She was the loving grandmother of Katherine, Ryan and Jennifer. Loving great‐grandmother to Arianna, Megan, Kelsey, Bjorn and Liam. She is survived by her three sisters in Ireland: Brigid Doyle, Annie Reynolds and Patricia Hoey.
She lived a full life. She started in Cloonsaran National School at the age of 4 and attended there until she was age 13 and was noted for being very bright. She moved to Dublin city when she was 16 and worked in the Belvedere Hotel as a waitress from age of 16 to 21. Back then it would have been a bustle of activity and lively, and very well‐known at the time as the city center of Dublin which was a far cry from the farmlands of Aughavas ‐ so the transition at age 16 from one to the other must have been exciting for her. She was always very independent and adventurous and so at age 21, she emigrated to America. When she arrived at Ellis Island in New York she stayed with The McBrien sisters‐ Bridget and Mary who sponsored her. They were originally from Leitrim as well and had moved to America some years before. Being relations of the paternal side of the Reynolds family including Fr. Michael McBrien they were all helpful in her move to America.
She found work at the famous Schrafft's Restaurants in New York City where she worked as a waitress for many years. She adapted well to the city life. She attended many Irish dances and that is where she met a very special person named John Mc Ternan who was also from County Lietrim. They married on September 6, 1952. They settled in Brooklyn where they would raise their 5 children. During these years, Julie worked for Abraham & Straus Department store for 20 years.
She and John retired to Milford, Pennsylvania in 1985, a town and home that they both loved very much. They often remarked at how much this home and land had the feeling of their Ireland roots. They had multiple vegetable and flower gardens in which they always took great pride.
She very much valued her family as much as her religion. She was a devout Catholic and prayed the Rosary daily.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Juliana's memory to:
