Joseph K. Melleby, 85, of Bay Ridge, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2017. He was a Korean War Veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954. A lifelong member of the Bay Ridge community, he was the beloved husband of the late Anita (nee DePaola) Melleby, for 62 years. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Paula McKeown, son-in- law Thomas McKeown, and his adored granddaughter, Nancy Louise McKeown. Joseph was born on October 30, 1931 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to his parents Alfred Melleby and Catherine McNulty. After attending Catholic Elementary school, Joseph attended Fort Hamilton High School. During his high school years, he met Anita DePaola at George's Luncheonette in Bay Ridge. They dated until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps soon after his graduation. They continued their courtship throughout his service. Upon his return from his service in the Marines, they became engaged, marrying on July 9, 1955. Joe then began a 50 year career in the trucking industry. He began working for Luckenbach Steamship Company as a Shipping Clerk and Solicitor. Hard-working and determined, Joe's career continued to move forward as a Sales Representative for RC Motor Lines. He then became a National Account Representative for Specter Freight, a Sales and Trade Show Executive with Carolina Freight and then a National Accounts Executive and Trade Show Specialist with ABF Freight. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Joe was active in local politics, volunteering often for local candidates. He was also an active parishioner at St. Patrick's Church where he served as President of the Holy Name Society in the 1970s. He later served as Lecter at St. Patrick's from the 1980s until the early 2000s. Joe retired from the trucking industry in 2002 and, with his wife Anita and continued to be an active fixture in the Bay Ridge community. Joseph was a well-respected businessman and a much-loved member of his community. Everyone Joe encountered became a friend and all enjoyed his gregarious, fun-loving personality. Joe was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
