The Passing of Joseph P. McHugh, Patriarch of the McHugh Clan from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

Joseph P. McHugh, a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge, died on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

Joseph was born at Victory Memorial Hospital to Helen and Michael McHugh on May 28, 1934.  Joe proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Following the army, Joe began a career at Equitable Life Insurance while attending Fordham University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1962.  He then married the late Barbara Oleksak and settled in St. Anselm's Parish, Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  There they welcomed seven children, Joseph, Maureen, Michael, James, John and twins Barbara & Kathleen, to whom they instilled the importance of family, faith and community values.

Joseph was actively involved in the St. Anselm Youth Activities program for over 25 years.  He served as President, Boy Scout Leader, ran the grounds crew for baseball and softball, and volunteered at many other Bay Ridge activities.

After his employment with Equitable Life Insurance Company of New York, Joe worked for New York State's Worker's Compensation Board as the District Administrator.  Joseph was always active in local politics and was well regarded by both political friends and foes.

Joseph McHugh generously gave of his time and energy to the following organizations: Bay Ridge American Legion Post #157, General Phil Sheridan Council #908 – Knights of Columbus, Bayfort Benevolent Association, Bay Ridge Men's Club, Colonial Club, The Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, The St. Patrick Society of Brooklyn (2nd Vice President), Commodore Barry Club, The Philosophers Club (post-officer) and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 22.

Surviving are his seven children Joseph (Janette), Maureen, Michael, James (Kristin), John, Barbara (Kenneth) and Kathleen (Brendan) and his six beautiful grandchildren, Luke, Amanda, Madison, Patrick, Grace and Sean.
