Obituary

We celebrate the life of John Swiontak, age 60, who passed away on Dec. 13.

Born in Brooklyn to Mary Ann Cardi and the late John Swiontak, John is survived by his wife, Elaine and his sons John (Kathleen) and James, who he loved beyond measure and was so proud of. But his greatest love was his granddaughter, Dani Jane. He loved being her pop and wanted nothing more than to spend time with her.

He is also survived by his mother, his brother Thomas, beloved son-in-law of Stewart and Ellen Holmes, brother-in-law to Janice and Sean as well as Elaine's large extended family, here and in Scotland.

John was a huge fan of the Mets, the Grateful Dead, Green Day, Jack Daniels and the Leif (not in that particular order). His favorite place was on the back deck with a joint and some stale bread to feed the birds that would visit.

John grew up in Sunset Park and played ball for Sheridan Council Knights of Columbus and Keegan's Bar. He was a beloved girls softball coach and umpire. He was a maintenance worker for NYCHA for 37 years, where he touched the hearts of tenants each day. They will miss John as much as his family — as will everyone who was lucky enough to call him a friend.
