Obituary

John W. Mason of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on August 15th, 2024 in the comfort of his home of over 60 years.  He was surrounded by his adoring children, Roger and Chris Mason. John was the beloved and dedicated husband of Jean Mason for 64 years, who predeceased him on February 10, 2020. He is survived by his two sons, Roger and Chris Mason, their wives Annette and Robin, and three cherished grandchildren: Sky Rae, Sara Olivia and Taylor John.

Known to most in the touring industry as the "Prince of Guides", John established quite the reputation as a storyteller, joke teller and seasoned expert of all things New York City. Having delivered commentary for over 60 years, he was the longest standing tour guide of the Circle Line and has been interviewed, reviewed, photographed, and written about many times during his legendary career.  His last tour was on his 90th birthday in November 2023, when he could not resist to call out the beauty of Lady Liberty and the Freedom Tower at his own birthday party.

Growing up as a young actor, John's most revered role was portraying Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls, performing with his local theater group. He thrived acting on stage as well as playing the piano, singing for audiences, family, and friends alike. His smooth soothing voice was complimented by his quick, clever humor that always made those around him laugh. He radiated an effortless charm that drew people in and made them feel instantly comfortable and always loved.

John was the ultimate family man, taking an active role in raising his three grandchildren and delighting them with his famous stories and beloved recipes. He loved taking them to Coney Island for Nathan's hotdogs and enjoyed challenging them with musical trivia from eras long before their time. His passion for Brooklyn was matched only by his love for music; his library filled with albums from Frank Sinatra to the Bee Gees, reflecting his deep connection to both his city and his favorite tunes.

John also created and managed a successful family glass engraving business fulfilling his artistic calling and shared his craft with the entire family. His hand engravings were self-taught works of art that were enjoyed by customers for over 30 years. His workshop still exists in the basement of his home.  John was a kind and gentle man whose humor and love for his family will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to sincerely thank everyone for their support and condolences during this time. Rest in peace, Dear Dad, you will forever be loved and remembered. You will forever be our "Prince of Dads"
