John W. Comer, Jr. passed away Saturday, January 29
th
2022, leaving a loving family and a legacy of hard work, service and humor.
Born on July 22, 1944, John was a lifelong Bay Ridge resident and parishioner of St. Anselm. After graduation from St. Anselm and St. John's Prep, John attended Niagara University and later Fordham University, earning a BA in History and an M.B.A.
Called to serve his country after graduation from Niagara, John entered the United States Army in 1967, and was decorated for his service in Vietnam in 1968. After his Honorable Discharge, he would meet and marry the former Judith Anne McGuire in 1971, and enjoy 50 years of marriage.
Their son, James, was born in 1974, and John would pass on his love of the NY Giants, dislike of the Yankees, and his commitment to community, but most of all the importance of laughter and not taking oneself too seriously. As the years passed, John's love for his son was communicated in many ways—by becoming the biggest Boston College football fan possible, by reading the Boston Globe and Providence Journal and in a thousand other small ways which taken together provided lifelong evidence of his love and devotion.
In addition to life with his family, John built a career in retail banking and stock transfer services, and was an exemplar of hard work, diligence and respect for those with whom he worked. These examples remain part of the legacy he leaves his family.
The constant in John's life was service to his parish and his community. He loved being part of St. Anselm, and was a student, choirboy, Youth Activities volunteer, President of the Parent's Guild, Member of the Parish Council, Lector and finally bookkeeper at St. Anselm School. This lifelong involvement was passed on to his family, and the example of community involvement and service to others was a profound one for all those who know him.
As the years passed, John's family expanded, and he welcomed his beloved daughter in-law Tara (Steffens) into his life. He delighted in hearing about her many achievements, and he would proudly recount her successes in triathlon and at the American Heart Association to all who would listen.
In 2004, John was blessed with a grandson, Aidan, followed soon by his brother Seamas in 2005. These boys would turn John into Grandpa, and provide him with immense pride, love and happiness the rest of his life. He loved each report of their activities, following their sports, and school achievements, and delighted in Seamas' spot-on impression of him.
John is pre-deceased by his parents John W. Sr. and Elizabeth M. Comer, and is survived by his beloved sisters Eileen Elwood (Lee) and Elizabeth C. O'Neill (the late Lawrence)
