John Joseph Checkett, age 79, died on January 22 due to complications stemming from dementia. Born in Brooklyn in 1941, John, better known as Jack to his friends, was a graduate of Immaculate Heart of Mary elementary school and Power Memorial High School. After serving in as an MP in Germany for the US Army, he married the love of his life, Joyce (Judy) Corley. He served New York State as both a Narcotics Corrections Officer and Safety Officer, in addition to working as a starter in an office building in Manhattan. He spent decades working two full-time jobs simultaneously to support his family, to whom he was passionately devoted.
Although best known to casual acquaintances as a devoted fan of Notre Dame football and other sports, Jack's real passion was Irish history and culture, and, despite a lifelong learning disability that hampered his ability to process the written word, would spend his spare time pouring through volumes of history, fiction, and literature, while listening to Irish music. He had a special fondness and appreciation for larger-than life characters ranging from Jackie Gleason to John Wayne, and cherished people who were brave enough to unwaveringly present their real and honest selves to the world, no matter how eccentric. He was known as someone who genuinely loved talking to people, taking an active interest in their lives, helping them feel proud of their passions and accomplishments, and provoking their laughter with his quick wit. He also genuinely loved cats, who remained his constant companions throughout his life.
He is survived by his brother Alfred Checkett, his children John-Paul Checkett, Peter Checkett, and Meghan Mullaney, his daughter-in-law Ellen Brand, and his six grandchildren.
