IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan Elaine
Thomson
June 4, 2025
Joan Elaine (Ericson) Thomson, beloved daughter of Eleanor Anderson Ericson and Edwin Ericson, was born on October 14, 1930, and passed away on June 4, 2025, at the age of 94. Known affectionately as Grandma, Gram, Gigi, and Precious, Joan was the family's matriarch—truly ahead of her time. She worked full-time in an era when most married women with families did not, paving the way for future generations.
Joan loved shopping, good food, a nice glass of white wine with ice cubes, playing cards, and bingo. Above all, she cherished her family.
A proud resident of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, Joan was active in her community and a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and Redeemer St. Johns, as well as several seniors groups and the Bay Ridge Alumni Association. She especially loved sitting "in the gate," watching over her neighborhood and greeting passersby.
Joan always took pride in her appearance, with her weekly appointments at the local beauty parlor for her hair and nails. She was a fashion icon in her own right, known for her platinum blonde hair, perfectly painted nails in pink or red, and her love of leopard print clothing—she always looked her best.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, Robert Harold Thomson, and her brother, Leonard Ericson. She is survived by her three loving children and their spouses: Elaine Masterson-Hayden and Tom Hayden, Karen and Bart Goslin, and Robert Bruce and Colette Thomson. Joan was a devoted grandmother to her eight grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Jamie Masterson, Rory and Venessa Masterson, Alisha Goslin and Ryan Balfe, Alanna and Angel Quinones, Bart Goslin Jr., Elizabeth Hayden and Brendan Neschke, Robert Hunter Thomson, and Liam Thomson. She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Malaya, Cee-J, Caleigh, M-Jay, Acacia, Vaughn, and Alyda. Joan is survived by her nephew and nieces Scott, Dawn, Trudy, and Melanie, and their families. She is fondly remembered by special family member Lisa Mayorga; the Fenniman family, especially Aunt Ducky and Candace McSweeney; the Dunns; and dear friends Kathy Byrne, the Kirschs, and the Raymonds.
Joan's quick wit, loving nature, and indomitable spirit touched everyone she met. She was a true firecracker, always ready with a sharp quip or a funny phrase, and the world is a little less bright without her in it.
After a brief hospitalization—which she absolutely detested—Joan is now at peace. Her family finds comfort knowing she is reunited with her loved ones and rests with her maker.
Joan would want all who knew her to remember the good times and cherish the wonderful memories shared together. She is surely watching over her family with love and grace.
A wake will be held on Thursday, June 12, from 4-8pm at Clavin's Funeral Home, 7722 4th Ave., Brooklyn, NY. Joan will be laid to eternal rest alongside her husband the following morning at Calverton Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd., Calverton, NY.
