Formerly Sister Mary Charles of the Sisters of Mercy, Brooklyn, New York, Joan passed away peacefully in the loving care of family and friends.Born into a working class family , she lived a story book life first as a teenaged novice , as a professed nun , as a social worker and a wife. As a Sister of Mercy, she taught in Brooklyn Catholic schools and then in the Canal Zone and later as a missionary sister in rural Panama. After years in Panama, she left the Sisters of Mercy and became a social worker in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn where she met her former professor at St. Francis College, Dr. Joseph Palisi, an academic and the Borough Historian of Brooklyn. They married in 1979. He died in 1993. During their marriage, Joan returned to teaching in Catholic schools from which she retired . She was also predeceased by her parents, Angelo (Charles) and Marie Policano, brother Patrick and sister Madelaine Joan is survived by her brother Joseph Policano( wife Kathleen), cousin Joseph Galardi (wife Sherri), nieces, Pamela Cabibi, Adrienne Goodman (Alex), Cory Harper(John), Lisa Pearson (Matthew); nephews, Charles Pulcano (Debbie), Christopher Policano, Matthew Policano as well as adored grand nieces, nephews and cousins.
