Joan O'Brien, age 87, formerly of New Port Richie, Florida passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022. She was a retiree of New York State Court of Administration where she proudly worked for over twenty-five years. Joan was born May 8, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York, moved to Campell Hall, New York, where she raised her family. After retirement she lived a few years in Jackson, New Jersey but decided she had enough of the snow and moved to Florida. Throughout her life, Joan volunteered her time for many organizations such as Rosary Society, Parent Teacher Association, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Republican Club (back in the old days before email... all the mailings for the Rosary Society and Republican club left her children's tongues pretty parched). When she moved to New Port Richie, Florida she volunteered to call on homebound seniors and coordinate resources and services as needed; whether it was making sure they had nutritious food or transportation for their pet to the vet. Joan loved to travel. "Anybody know where Mom is?" was not an unusual question. Even though she lived in Florida, Joan attended just about every family holiday celebration and special occasion honoring her beloved family and friends in New York, New Jersey, Colorado and many other states between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, James and Julia McGarrigle and her four brothers; Robert Edward,James and John McGarrigle. She adored her family: son Leroy and wife Lena, daughters Joan and husband John, Margaret (Peggy) and husband John (deceased) and son Patrick and wife Amy, her fifteen grandchildren: Gino, Christina and husband Sean, Peter and wife Michele, Jessica and husband Reggie, Christopher, Steven and wife Sarah, Stephanie (deceased), Brandon, Emily and husband James, Robert, Peter, John, Katherine, Brian, Megan and seven great grandchildren: Jaidyn, Harlow, Wyatt, Gavin, Grayson, Theodore and Monique. Joan is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family that she cared for deeply.
