Obituary

Jane passed peacefully on February 5, 2026, at home in Bay Ridge at the age of 104.

Jane was born in 1921 to Peter and Helen Fitzgerald, the third of six children and the oldest girl. Her father died when she was nine and her mother showed the strength, intelligence and faith in God that Jane would also embody, raising a successful family during the Depression.

Jane was a lifetime resident of Brooklyn, graduating from Brooklyn College and working as a statistician for the A.C. Nielsen Company before marrying Raymond, a man who adored her and supported her in her civic as well as her family life. They had three children, Donald (Arlyn), who pre-deceased her; Janice (Carlos); and Kenan (Veronica); as well as five grandchildren, Lauren (Reggie), Nicole, Ryan, Brianne, and Caralyn.

Her summers were spent at Breezy Point, from childhood through adolescence and adulthood. It was where she met Raymond, and where she had some of her happiest times.

Jane moved to Bay Ridge in 1951. She taught for over 20 years at Our Lady of Angels School, employing the kindness and intelligence that were her hallmark.

Jane became active in local community affairs in 1968, and served as president of the Bay Ridge Community Council, the Bay Ridge Council for Mental Health, and the Lutheran Medical Center Auxiliary. In addition, she was a member of the Bay Ridge Council on Aging and the 68thPrecinct Community Council. She was Parliamentarian for the Bay Ridge Community Council and legislative chair for the AARP Bay Ridge Chapter, Lutheran Medical Center Auxiliary and Bay Ridge Council on Aging. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the Bay Ridge Center and a trustee of the Kassenbrock Scholarship Fund. Additionally, Jane was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She received the Bay Ridge Community Council's Civic Award, Brooklyn College's Woman of the Year Award for Community Service, the United Hospital Fund Auxilian of the Year Award, City Council Proclamation for Outstanding Contributions to the People of Bay Ridge, the Bay Ridge BPW Woman of the Year Award, and awards from Our Lady of Angels' Rosary Society, the Brooklynwide Interboro Agency Council on the Aging, the Bay Ridge Mental Health Council and the Bay Ridge Bicentennial Committee.  In all of her endeavors, Jane showed intelligence, strength, and compassion, as well as a willingness to work hard.

Above all, Jane loved her family - her five grandchildren, her siblings, her nieces and nephews - and Bay Ridge.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Guild for Exceptional Children .
