IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Vincent
Larkin
November 26, 1934 – July 23, 2024
James V. Larkin ("Jimmy"), was born on November 26, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, and was the second of four children born to Patrick Larkin and Agnes (Connor) Larkin.
From 1956 to 1958, Jimmy served in the Army and earned medals as a sharpshooter. After a brief career at the Telephone company, Jimmy would find his true calling as a New York City Firefighter in 1962. That same year, he would meet Mary O'Loughlin, a lovely Irish lass from County Clare, on a blind date. They married in 1963 and raised four children; Patricia, Michael, Terri, and Erin. They were married for 58 years until Mary's passing in 2022.
Jimmy worked at Ladder Company 114 (Tally Ho!) in Sunset Park throughout his 33 year career, where he earned the nickname, "Lightning Larkin," for his easy swagger and pace entering and exiting burning structures. The Fire Department was his home away from home, and he always thought of his fellow firefighters as his brothers.
As a lifetime member of the Bay Ridge community, Jimmy loved working on his home on Colonial Road, sitting in the yard with his paper, and riding his bike around the neighborhood and to/from work, rain or shine. He was known by all for his kindness, generosity, chauffeuring of family and friends, and his sneaky skill of picking up the check without you ever knowing. He never wanted praise or thanks for these gestures, as it was how he showed his love to others.
Jimmy is survived by his four children, his two sons-in-law, Pat and Kevin, and his seven grandkids; Alexa, Kyle, Meaghan, Katie, Clare, Quinn and Elle, who lovingly referred to him as "Poppi." Jimmy is predeceased by his beloved sister, Kitty, her husband Bill, and his brother-in-law Martin. He will be greatly missed by his brother, Patrick and his wife, Jenny; his sister, Agnes; his sister-in-law, Eileen; and his brother-in-law, Michael, and his wife, Rita. He was also a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews, who loved celebrating Thanksgiving at his home with him and his family every year.
Rest easy, "Lightning Larkin," you lived a long and fruitful life.
