Irene Margaret Whitehorne was born November 8th 1916 in Manhattan to Irene and Eugene Whitehorne. In 1932 the family moved to Brooklyn, where she attended Bay Ridge High School. She met Harold Nelson while playing tennis at the Crescent Hill Athletic Club on Shore Road. Their happy relationship led to a marriage proposal, on the last day of the 1939  World's fair, they were wed on September 14th 1940 at Christ Church.
With her husband Harold serving as Liaison Officer in Europe during WWII. Irene became active in many local organizations and was President of the newly formed Bay Ridge Day Nursery. Irene went to work at the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, and retired from there in 1981. She volunteered at Lutheran Medical Center, and later became President of the Hospital Auxiliary. In addition she was involved in many local organizations, including the Board of The Narrows Botanical Gardens.
Irene was a parishioner of Christ Church Bay Ridge for over seventy years; where she raised her family and was active in all parish and church affairs, being appointed Chairperson for the 150th Anniversary Dinner Dance in 2005. The church chapel was later dedicated in honor of the Nelson family in 2007.
Irene was a unique woman, loved by her family and friends, who peacefully passed away on August 11, 2016. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, and two brothers, Thomas and Eugene. Irene is survived by her children Philip, Harold, Everette, India and Thomas, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
