Obituary

Hugh E. Gallagher passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024. Hugh was a life-long resident of Brooklyn but truly enjoyed his second home in Lighthouse Point/Pompano Beach, Florida.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years Geraldine and his devoted children: Catherine (Rob), Hugh (Marykate), Linda (Donnie), Daniel (Kristen). He was the very proud and loving Grandpa to 11 grandchildren:  Robbie, Bridget, Shannon, Jack, Michael, Megan, Rose, Molly, Donnie, Hugh John, and Timmy.

Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Flynn) of Gatestown, County Roscommon and Hugh Gallagher of Achill Island, County Mayo in Ireland along with his brother John and sister Katherine.

Hugh is also survived by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, Godchildren, and sisters/brothers-in-law who all adored him.

Hugh was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, serving at a nuclear missile base during the height of the Cold War in the late 1950's. In his spare time, Hugh enjoyed reaching many people and places far across the globe as a Ham Radio Operator, call sign (KA2SKO). He grew up idolizing the Brooklyn Dodgers but when they moved, he gravitated to the Detroit Tigers, a fandom that would continue to his last days. Of course, he rooted for and experienced all the highs and lows of our beloved New York Mets.

Hugh was a proud Terrier, inspired and educated by Franciscan Brothers at both St Francis Prep High School and St. Francis College. He earned a Master of Science from Long Island University and Master of Education from Fordham University. Hugh worked for the NYC Department of Education for 37 years serving as a teacher and eventual Dean of Students at Nathan Hale Junior High School, IS 293 on Court Street.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation .
