Esther Lillian Clemensen Thompson was born in Park Slope, Brooklyn on Easter Saturday March 22 1913 to Nils and Agnette Clemensen. Her mother named her Esther Lillian after the Easter Lilly she was given as a gift. Esther was the third child born of 7 children; Edith, Mabel, Alf, Edie, Ruth and Nellie.
On August 4 1934, Esther married Lawrence Thompson. They moved to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where they raised 6 children- Larry Jr, Dick, Janet, Lois, Karen and Beverly. Esther and Lawrence retired to Wakefield, RI in 1978 before moving to Toms River, NJ in 1990. She had said that some of her happiest memories were in Rhode Island when her grown children and 18 grandchildren visited and spent summer vacations with her.
After Lawrence passed away in 1996, Esther remained in NJ and lived close to her sister Mabel before moving to Rockland County, NY from 2007 until 2012. Esther returned to Brooklyn in 2012 where she lived out her remaining years. She was lovingly cared for by her daughter Karen and son-in-law Larry and she celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends in 2013 at the Dyker Beach Golf Course. She lived at the Norwegian Christian Nursing home under wonderful care and enjoyed 5 honorary Centennial celebrations from 2015 to 2019.
A devout Christian, Esther lived her life with unconditional love, grace and unwavering faith, praising Jesus and sharing his word with everyone. When asked how she was she often responded "A1+", "101 percent" and "Trust in the Lord". In her final days she sang the hymn "Oh Happy Day When Jesus Washed My Sins Away" along with her daughter Janet.
On November 30, 2019 at 106 years old, Esther peacefully left this earth to live eternally with her Lord and Savior. She is survived by her 5 living Children, 17 Grandchildren, 43 Great Children and 10 Great-Great Grandchildren. The Lord blessed her with a very loving family who will miss her terribly and love her always. She is now rejoicing in heaven with her husband, her son Larry Jr, her grandson Jerry Jr, her parents, her sisters, her brother and many others who have gone before her. Although we are sadden by her passing, we are grateful for all the wonderful memories and many blessed years we have had her with us. We look forward to seeing her again.
