Born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in 1935 to Edward Murphy and Eleanor nee Tonry. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School and worked for Metropolitan Insurance Company. In 1957, she married James VonDollen (deceased) and together they raised their family.

She is the proud mother of her daughters Judith Garrity (Thomas) and Joan McCue (David) and sons Daniel (Kathy) and Robert (deceased) (Sylvia). Grandchildren Thomas (Alexis), Siobhan, Brianne, Caitlin (William), Jennifer, Emily, Matthew, Kristen, Erin and Joseph. And the greatest joy of her life, her great grandchildren Emily, Thomas and Connor.

Eleanor was a member of St Anselm Parish where she served as a Eucharistic Minster and was an active member of the Young at Heart Club.
