Obituary

On January 3, 2024, Eileen Ruth Maher, 80, got her wings and went to walk with the angels. Born on February 19, 1943 in New York City, the daughter of Albert Victor and Ruth Elizabeth (Cornely) Whelan. Eileen grew up in Washington Heights and graduated from Katherine Gibbs School. She went on to become an Executive Secretary at Con Edison until her retirement. It is there she met her husband of 29 years, Michael Albert Maher (d. 2017). The two moved to Nevada in their retirement for two decades before Eileen returned to New York in 2020. She was living at Sunrise Senior Living Facility in Brooklyn, New York at the time of her passing.

Eileen was active in her parish community both in New York and Pahrump, Nevada. She was also a member of Pahrump's Red Hat Society. Eileen enjoyed her Manhattans and loved to crochet, read the Daily News from cover-to-cover (even in Nevada), as well as walk through "Wally World" and go out for Chinese food lunch with friends after playing slots at Saddle West Casino.

Eileen, or "Grammy," is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Christopher Corsi; her grandchildren, Gavin, Laura, Kyle and Chloe; her sisters Margaret Ann (Joseph LaManna) and Mary Lou (George Hockaday) and many nieces and nephews. Anyone who knew Eileen knows that her grandchildren were stars in her eyes.

The funeral mass was held at Saint Anselm Roman Catholic Church in Bay Ridge on January 5. Eileen was laid to rest alongside Michael in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. Those who wish to remember Eileen in a special way are asked to donate in her name to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
