Cecilia Peña Flores — beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother — passed away on April 10, 2020. A dignified woman of humble beginnings, Cecilia was born on February 1, 1944 in Mamey, La Vega in Dominican Republic. In 1967, she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York through her marriage to Persio Flores. Together, they raised six wonderful children.

Cecilia was a pioneer in her family — the first to arrive in the United States. Despite only having a third-grade education, she worked a factory job and helped put four of her children through college. She gave them all opportunities she could have never imagined.

We will remember Mamá, as she was dearly known by all those who loved her, for her nurturing character, infamous one-liners, and extraordinary cooking. The moment you walked through the doors of Mamá's home, you knew you were entering a safe space where you could be loved, fed a delicious meal, and laugh incessantly.

Mamá's life had an everlasting impact on all those who met her. We know she is watching over us—as the calm presence we have always had and always needed.

She is survived by her husband, 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
