Obituary

Carole Florence Gili (nee Westerberg) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at her daughter's home in West Chester, PA. She was 90 years old. She was born and raised on 71st St. in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Bay Ridge HS in June 1951. She was recognized with several academic honors including; The Spiers Memorial Medal for Excellence in French and ranked highest in her graduating class for Spanish. Carole received further distinction when she was elected to membership in the league of Arista. She married her true love, Anthony J. Gili in 1956 and they raised their family together at their home on East 2nd St., in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Brooklyn, from 1956 through the 1980's.

They purchased a new home in Mystic Island, New Jersey and spent a few years going back and forth to Brooklyn until Anthony retired and they moved full-time to Mystic. In retirement, they each had part-time jobs; Anthony at the Showboat Casino and Carole at the Trump Plaza Casino in Atlantic City. When Anthony passed away in 1999, Carole continued to live in Mystic until 2012, when Super Storm Sandy destroyed her home there. Afterwards she spent time living with her daughter's family in Pennsylvania and several years in independent living at St. Martha Villa in Downingtown, PA.

Carole was pre-deceased by her loving husband Anthony of 42 years and his parents Charles and Eva Gili nee Colombo, her mother Mildred Westerberg nee Schlieper, her father Leonard C. Westerberg, her special aunt Elvera Meyers nee Westerberg and her husband Uncle "Harry" Henry Meyers, her Grandparents Axel and Ragnhild Westerberg nee Erlandson.

Carole is survived by her devoted children; Charles A. Gili and his wife Laura, Anthony J. Gili Jr., Christopher J. Gili and his wife Fredericka, Elizabeth Anne Friedman nee Gili and her husband Jeffrey Friedman MD, Carole's dear grandchildren; Charles A. Gili Esq. and his wife Jaimie, Danny Gili, Janet Gili, Kristina Gili, David Friedman, Hannah Gili, Carolyn Wagner nee Friedman and her husband Keith Wagner, Katherine Macias DPT nee Gili and her husband Charles Macias and Julia Friedman.  Carole is also survived by her cherished Great Grandchildren; Sean Gili, Alexandra Gili, Avery Wagner, Penelope Gili, Ella Wagner, Melania Gili and Charles Macias Jr.  She is also survived by her life-long best friend, Catherine Pettersen and Carole's dear cousins Gloria, Nancy, Florence and Mark.

Carole had a special blend of love, intelligence, kindness and humor that made her unique.  She was warm and loving to all those she knew.  She was your biggest cheerleader.  She took the time to make everyone she knew feel special.  Carole enjoyed watching old movies, reading, doing crossword puzzles and playing poker on the casino machines.  Most of all she loved her family.  She loved spending time with her grand and great grandchildren.  There was nothing she liked better than knowing "the kids" were coming to visit.  Mystic Island became that wonderful place where mom and dad hosted all the family gatherings over their years there.  She and dad always made it a magical time for everyone, especially the kids.  She loved to hear our stories about our accomplishments and adventures and was extremely proud of all of us.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Carole's name are welcome.
