Obituary

Our aunt, Carmen Pombo Arias, known by all as “Chucha,” 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 3, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carmen Gonzalez and Antonio Arias; her oldest sister, Rosina; and her husband of four decades, Ricardo.

She is survived by her sister Amalia “Loli” Fernández, nieces and nephews Ana, Jorge, and Pati, grandnieces Manuela and Eugenia, great grandniece Olivia, grandnephew Brennan, and other members of the family in the metro area: Carlos, Mabel and José and their children. Back home in Galicia, she is survived by her sister Ana; her brothers Toño and Xurxo, and his wife Doris and extended family.

She was self-taught, finishing only early elementary school in A Coruña, where she was born, before becoming an accomplished seamstress. She loved to knit, and most of us treasure at least one of the scarves she made. She migrated three times: first with Loli to Córdoba, Argentina, at age 19 after her mother’s passing, then, to Montevideo, Uruguay rejoining her dear sister, Loli and where she met then married Ricardo; and finally settling in Brooklyn, NY, in the early 70's for the remainder of her life. She never remarried; her heart always belonged to Ricardo. She worked several years as a seamstress in Brooklyn until her retirement.

Chucha was a warm soul, always ready with an easy smile and willing to strike up a conversation with everyone —even in English, which she never learned to speak fluently. There was always a “good morning” and “hello” for everyone she encountered during her daily walks, going from store to store along 5th Avenue, mostly window shopping.
