IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur James
Goyena
April 10, 2025
It is with deep faith in the promise of resurrection that we announce the passing of Arthur "Artie" Goyena, who has gone to be with his Lord and Savior.
Born in Flatbush, Brooklyn to Antoinette Cartusciello and Arthur Henry Goyena, Artie was raised in a close-knit family home where faith was the foundation. Growing up in a multi-family dwelling alongside his parents, two sisters, three cousins, grandmother, aunt, and uncle, Artie experienced the blessing of family and community from an early age. Through his father and mothers' heritages, strong values of family were instilled in him.
Artie's relationship with Christ began early at 10 years old, being brought up in Bethany Chapel where his father led Sunday night services. He later served as superintendent of the Sunday School, nurturing the spiritual growth of many young people.
After graduating from Stuyvesant High School, Artie continued his education at Brooklyn College, earning bachelor's degrees in both Science and Mathematics. During his college years, he dedicated himself to InterVarsity ministries.
Professionally, Artie enjoyed a long and successful career in Commodity Futures. But those who knew him best remember his passion for the Lord that exceeded all worldly accomplishments. His was often the loudest voice heard from the congregation during worship, as his love for prayer and praise through music was uncontained.
It was while serving at 59th Street Church that the Lord brought Artie together with his wife, Judith Heimdal. Their 39-year marriage was a testament to Christ-centered love and service. Together, they served faithfully, with Artie contributing his gifts on the 59th Street Church Trustee Board and the Norwegian Christian Home Board of Directors.
Beyond his spiritual life, Artie was an avid Yankee fan and enjoyed playing tennis. These activities brought him joy, but they paled in comparison to the joy he found in the Lord.
Artie is survived by his wife Judith Goyena. While we mourn his absence among us, we rejoice that Artie now dwells in the house of the Lord forever, joining the heavenly chorus he so loved to take part in here on earth.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing." - 2 Timothy 4:7-8
