Arlene Mary Berriel (nee Flanagan) peacefully passed away Monday evening with her children holding her hand in a cocoon of love and appreciation. She was born November 7, 1942 in Brooklyn where she and her sister Alice (Boylston) were raised solely by their father, David J. Flanagan, after their mother, Irene, died when they were young. Arlene graduated from St.John's University and worked for the City of New York for 35 years, first at City Hall, then as a social worker and finally retired from her illustrious career as a branch manager for Off Track Betting. She married William R. Berriel in May 1977 and together they raised 2 children, Irene and William.
Arlene was known to be strong willed, funny, positive and loving. She constantly strived to make things better around her, whether it was helping out with her kids' school, working as a shop steward at her union, the Teamsters, or getting elected to various committees in her HOA. While she will always be a Brooklyn girl, for the past 30 years Arlene has been visiting South Jersey and spent most of her later years at her "place by the shore" in her beloved Sea Oaks Community, where she always volunteered to host parties and happy hours as part of the Social Committee as well as doing service activities with the Red Hatters. She organized caroling for the local senior centers during the holiday season to bring joy to all, worked with the local food bank to organize donation drives and was constantly knitting gifts for her family and those less fortunate with her Nimble Fingers knitting club. All those who knew Arlene loved her and we will miss her.
