Obituary

Antonio De Vito, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was born in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi (Naples), Italy on May 12th, 1933.

He is survived by his wife Giuseppina, children Aida (Sam) and Francis (Nina), and grandchildren Marissa (Billy), Eric (Adelaine), Andrea (Jack), Lauren, Michela, and great-grandchildren, Jolina, Giuliana, Sofia, and a great-grandson on the way.

At age 16 in 1949, he emigrated to Park Slope, Brooklyn to join his parents and other family members who had arrived to the United States previously. He married his beloved wife Giuseppina on December 8, 1955. The youngest of three sons to make a new life for himself in the United States, Antonio worked in construction for over 35 years, and contributed to the building of major landmark locations around New York City such as the New York City Subway, the Verrazano Bridge and Kennedy Airport. He was a longstanding member of the Excavators Union Local 731.

A mainstay in the neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Antonio was an active member of his community and could always be found on his walks about the neighborhood with a smile, always ready to lend a hand or share a kind word with his neighbors and many friends.

A man of many talents, Antonio was a wonderful dancer, musician and singer, and would often come up with new songs with his accordion on the spot at familial gatherings. He also had one of the greenest thumbs in Brooklyn, and tended to multiple gardens he planted himself around Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey. One of his greatest gifts was that of a Storyteller. Antonio had a way with words and could often be found telling his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren wonderfully dazzling stories about his full and exciting life.

Those who were fortunate enough to know Tony, affectionately known as, "The Mayor of Bensonhurst," will remember him for his beautiful singing voice, talents on the accordion, charismatic smile, fascinating stories, and his deep love and affection for his wife, family, friends, and for life.
