My dearest Oma,
You were the greatest gift life ever gave me. You left us with nothing left unsaid, loving us unconditionally—no matter who we were or what we had done. It never mattered whether someone was "yours" by blood; you made everyone feel like family.
You were truly a flower picked from God's garden—giving endlessly, blooming through every season of the lives you touched. You taught me so much: the importance of showing up, of loving your family through every phase, of gathering around a good meal, even if just a few times a year.
You also left me with advice I'll never forget:
Go shopping when it rains—there'll be no lines.
If something was on sale, it was a bargain, no matter the bill.
If I was feeling down, you'd cook for me.
If I was hungry at 10 PM, I could call—and you'd warm something up without hesitation.
Always tend your garden—because people will always notice hard work and beauty.
These are just a few of the lessons you passed on. There are so many more I haven't even said out loud—but trust me, Oma, I know them. I carry them.
I'm so sorry I couldn't be there to ease your pain in the end. I know you left this world hurting, and that breaks my heart. You were the strongest grandmother a girl could ask for. I will never forget the strength and love you gave me growing up. I owe so much of who I am to you.
One day, I know I'll taste your chicken cutlets again. I'll see your beautiful face, hear your laughter, and feel your smile. Until then, I'll find you in every pansy I pass, every blooming garden, in piggies, in "cheese noodles," and in the sparkle of a perfect accessory.
For now, this is goodbye. But I will always look for you.
Love always,
xoxo, Kristina
