Angela Helen Amorosi Bennett

Bay Ridge lost one of its most cherished residents on August 18, 2024. Angela Helen Amorosi Bennett died peacefully at age 97, having lived a long and remarkable life. A proud, life-long Brooklynite, she was born to the late Dr. Leo and Irene Amorosi in 1927. Jean, as she was affectionately known, was the beloved wife of the late John J. Bennett, Jr., devoted mother of John, Leo, Thomas (Jacqueline), Carolyn (Martin) and Jeanne and doting grandmother to Gavin and Ryan. She was also a loving daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend.

After graduating from Fontbonne Hall Academy in Bay Ridge, she attended Marymount College, where she was named the Gerard scholar, the highest scholastic honor given by the college. Jean then received her master's degree in biology from Fordham University. She was a trailblazer for women in medicine in 1953 as one of only four women in her graduating medical school class at the Long Island College of Medicine (now SUNY Downstate). Jean completed her residency training in Pediatrics at Kings County Hospital in 1956. She was a community pediatrician in Bay Ridge until 1973 when she joined the faculty at SUNY Downstate where she developed the curriculum for the 3rd and 4th year medical students in pediatrics. She was a beloved teacher and advisor, winning multiple master teacher awards.  While at Downstate, she served as Board President of the Board of Trustees and Managers, and won the Clarence and Mary Dennis Dedicated Service Award. She was a distinguished Professor of Clinical Pediatrics retiring in 2003 after a medical career of 50 years.

A devoted Catholic, Jean was a member of the parish of St. Anselm's Roman Catholic Church for more than 70 years and was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.  Jean was a dedicated music lover and enjoyed listening to all types of music, but particularly loved opera and classical music. She attended many operas and faithfully listened to the Saturday matinee broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera. An avid baseball fan, she was an enthusiastic supporter of the New York Mets and more recently, became a New York Rangers fan, never losing hope for them winning the elusive Stanley cup.

Nothing was more important to Jean than her family. She adored her children and grandchildren, her many nieces, nephews and cousins and cherished her close relationships with them. She looked forward to any gathering that included members of her large family and was most happy when "everyone was together" so she could get the "full report" of their lives. She was a wonderful listener and conversationalist and continued to make devoted new friends well into her final years. Her family and many friends will miss her dearly but are comforted knowing she had an incredibly fulfilling and meaningful life.
